The Earliest English Kings is an interesting survey of Anglo-Saxon historical past from the 6th century to the 8th century and the dying of King Alfred. It explains and explores the 'Heptarchy' or the seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England, in addition to some of the peoples inside them, wars, faith, King Offa and the arriving of the Vikings. With maps and kinfolk timber, this publication finds the advanced, far-off and tumultuous occasions of Anglo-Saxon politics.

Bede was doing much the same in the early eighth century. In the past historians have tended to follow suit and have regarded the heptarchic kingdom as securely established by the sixth century, if not earlier in some cases. An inflexible and somewhat anachronistic pattern has thereby been imposed on the historical development of these pre-Viking kingdoms. The only Anglo-Saxon kingdom which is attested in a contemporary sixth-century record is Kent. Gregory of Tours in his Frankish Histories, written in the late sixth century, twice refers simply to Kent and once to Kent as a kingdom.

There are other considerations which militate against acceptance of the conventional dating. The reign of fifty-six years ascribed to Aethelberht is a 25 — The Earliest English Kings — very long one for a king in this period, and though Charibert’s father, Chlotar, is credited with a reign of fifty years among the Franks in the sixth century by Gregory of Tours, 12 reservations have been expressed about the historicity of round numbers of years like thirty or fifty when they occur in the records of early Germanic rulers.

16 On this evidence, she was born c. 520. On the testimony of Gregory, Charibert had a penchant for young girls and took three of them as his wives after Ingoberg, but if he did not marry Ingoberg until after he become king in 561 she would have been a woman of about 40 at the time. While this is not impossible, it is incongruous. One solution would be to suppose that though Charibert only married her in c. 561, he and Ingoberg had been cohabiting for some time, which would mean that the birth of Bertha could have occurred earlier.
