In the West, some things remain too dismal for release; in the East, there are only disproportionate ratios of closeness. XXVII. Hurt (The Madman) vs. Guilt (The Hooded) He who hides his madman dies voiceless. He who leaves a trace, leaves a wound. He who has rejected his demons badgers us to death with his angels. To understand, the intelligence must get itself dirty. Above all, before it even gets dirty, it has to get hurt. —Henri Michaux53 *** That earthquake which shook the house one night turned everything upside down.

Indd 13 1/11/2012 4:58:28 PM 14 The Writing of Violence in the Middle East states of nemesis, steering him into a morbid haze: “Then like a madman he turned up his overcoat collar and walked off towards the garage with long high strides. He no longer needed to close his cases. He could go with this evening’s coach. ”19 The nightmare leaves the imprint of its malicious eschatologies; he is iced over and staggers off. Mirage (“The Mirage”). This story treats the artistic troubles of a violinist in search of a valid listener, but who meets only inaccurate recipients.

Listen do you hear the darkness blowing? Something is passing in the night the moon is restless and red and over this rooftop where crumbling is a constant fear clouds, like a procession of mourners seem to be waiting for the moment of rain. A moment and then nothing night shudders beyond this window and the earth winds to a halt beyond this window something unknown is watching you and me. —Forugh Farrokhzad34 In the supposed West, one is caught amidst aerial streams, the body flung from side to side, and yet within this turmoil somehow muttering to oneself of liberation (emancipation-as-luck).
